Colour of the Year 2025: Future Dusk meets Uncanny Valley

Digital Lavender and Apricot Crush, move over.

Well next year, anyway.

Colour plays a powerful role in shaping our world and forecasting folk at WGSN and Coloro have revealed the 'Colour of the Year for 2025' as Future Dusk.

A hue described as “dark, moody colour that sits between blue and purple”.

BUT WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

  • As consumers, you'll be seeing it everywhere.

  • As retailers, you better add it to your colour palette

  • As thinkers, Future Dusk will epitomise the interplay between the physical, virtual, and fantasy realms that await us in 2025.

"Future Dusk represents a world where the uncanny valley is often and easily accessed," says Caroline Guilbert, Coloro's head of creative content. "Society's growing fascination with AI, the metaverse, and space exploration has influenced this prediction. It evokes a sense of mystery, reminiscent of a digital artist's rendering of a deep night sky or an otherworldly natural landscape."

Future Dusk follows in the footsteps of Digital Lavender, the shade that dominated 2023, and Apricot Crush, the anticipated colour of 2024.

The purplish tone is predicted to hold immense potential as a functional colour in various industries, including fashion and design.

Positioned at the convergence of two sections on the colour wheel, Future Dusk represents the liminal space between genders and can serve as both a statement colour and a deep neutral.

"As humans, our relationship with colour evolves as our understanding of the world expands," Guilbert explains. "In the near future, the lines between reality and fantasy will blur even further, and color will adapt to breathe life into these imaginative territories."

Coloro and WGSN have identified four additional hues that will gain popularity in the spring/summer 2025 season. Aquatic Awe, a jewel-tone teal; Sunset Coral, a vibrant sunset-y shade; Transcendent Pink, a subtle hue inspired by the digitally designed fantasy architecture of the metaverse; and Ray Flower, a radiant yellow derived from sunflower-based biomaterial research by British fashion designer Jess Redgrave.

The selection of Future Dusk as the 2025 Colour of the Year has been described as both a warning and an invitation. It urges us to navigate the uncertainties that lie ahead and encourages creatives to explore the uncharted territories of colour, imagination, and innovation.

Or if you don't think it's that deep, it'll definitely bring out your eyes.
